You already paid for this visa when you applied for the temporary and permanent stages together. You may still pay for health checks or police certificates.
Dependent children are usually included when you apply for the 820. A child holding a Dependent Child visa (subclass 445) can be added to your permanent application.
There is no visa label. Your visa is linked digitally to your passport.
Eligibility
What you need for the permanent stage.
You must hold the temporary partner visa (subclass 820) or a Dependent Child visa (subclass 445).
At least 2 years must have passed since you applied for the combined partner visa.
You must still be the spouse or de facto partner of the person who sponsored you, although some people may still qualify if the relationship has ended, for example because of family violence or the partner's death.
You and family members must keep meeting the health requirement, any government debts must be repaid or arranged, and the visa must be in the best interests of any applicant under 18. Permanent and provisional visa applicants, and family members applying with them, must have health examinations with an approved panel physician. Temporary visa applicants might need them, depending on the visa and their circumstances. For the character requirement, Home Affairs may ask for police certificates and Form 80.
Step by step
How the permanent stage works.
Check whether you need to do anything
If the permanent visa was granted straight after the temporary visa, there is nothing more to do. Check your visa in VEVO.

Visa outcome
You can be in or outside Australia when the permanent visa is decided. The decision is sent in writing.
When you have this visa
You are now a permanent resident.
You become a permanent resident on the day the visa is granted, with full work rights and access to study and Medicare.
You can travel in and out of Australia for 5 years from the grant date. After that, you will need a Resident Return visa.
As a permanent resident, you may be able to sponsor eligible family members. You cannot add family to this visa once it is granted.
After a certain time living in Australia, you may be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship.
Sponsor for the permanent stage
What sponsors need for the permanent partner visa.
You do not lodge a new sponsorship. You must be the same person who sponsored the temporary visa and still be married or in a de facto relationship with the applicant.
Attach your identity documents and a completed statutory declaration to the application in ImmiAccount when the permanent stage is assessed.
There is no fee for sponsors.
Sponsor eligibility
For the permanent stage.
You must be the same person who sponsored the temporary visa and continue to be the applicant's spouse or de facto partner. Home Affairs must approve you as the sponsor.

While your partner holds the visa
Your sponsorship obligations continue.
