About the Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186)

The Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186) lets skilled workers nominated by their Australian employer live and work in Australia permanently. It is the main employer-sponsored permanent visa and a common next step for 482 visa holders.

With this visa you can

  • Live, work and study in Australia indefinitely
  • Sponsor eligible family members to come to Australia
  • Apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible

You must

  • Be nominated by an Australian employer for an eligible position
  • Be under 45 when you apply, unless exempt
  • Meet the skills, experience and English requirements of your stream
  • Meet health and character requirements

Sponsors also pay a one-off Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy of AUD3,000 (annual turnover under AUD10 million) or AUD5,000 (AUD10 million or more). The levy is paid with the nomination, cannot be passed on to the worker, and is only refundable in limited circumstances.
