About the Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)

The Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462) is for young adults who want an extended holiday in Australia and to work here to help fund it. You can hold up to three visas, one after another, by completing specified work during your first and second visas.

Basic eligibility

  • Be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive)
  • Have a passport from an eligible country
  • Not be accompanied by dependent children

Good to know

  • You can work while you are in Australia
  • Apply online from outside Australia for your first visa
  • Do not book flights or make travel, work or study commitments until your visa is granted

China, India & Vietnam: ballot first

China, India and Vietnam passport holders must participate in a visa pre-application process (ballot) and be randomly selected in the ballot before they can apply for a first Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa. From 1 July 2026, a lower visa cost also applies to eligible Papua New Guinea passport holders.

Processing: around three months

To manage high demand, Home Affairs is normalising processing timeframes for most Working Holiday Maker visas. The average processing time is expected to be around three months. See current times.

Visa information is based on the Department of Home Affairs website (last updated September 2026). Fees, conditions and processing times can change, so always confirm current details using the Visa Pricing Estimator or ask our team.
