Eligibility
What you need.
You must be sponsored by your parent or step-parent, sibling or step-sibling, or child or step-child (or their partner) who is settled in Australia.
Neither you nor your partner can have a parent, sibling or child (including step-relatives) who usually lives outside Australia. Your only near relatives must be living in Australia.
You must be able to get an Assurance of Support, a legal commitment that you will not rely on government payments.
You and family members applying with you must meet the health and character requirements. Permanent and provisional visa applicants, and family members applying with them, must have health examinations with an approved panel physician. Temporary visa applicants might need them, depending on the visa and their circumstances. For the character requirement, Home Affairs may ask for police certificates and Form 80.
Previous refusals or cancellations are considered, government debts must be repaid or arranged, and applicants aged 18 or over read the Life in Australia booklet and sign the Australian Values Statement.
The visa may be refused if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.

As a newly arrived resident, you may need to wait before you can access some Australian Government payments.
After meeting the residence requirements you may apply for citizenship, and as a permanent resident you may sponsor eligible family members.
