About the Temporary Activity Visa (Subclass 408)
The Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408) lets you come to Australia to do specific types of work on a short-term, temporary basis. It has 10 streams, each for a different type of activity, from Australian Government endorsed events and research to sport, entertainment, religious work and superyacht crew.
Every stream costs from AUD535 (exemptions may apply in limited circumstances), and you can apply in or outside Australia, but not in immigration clearance. Most streams let you include members of your family unit. Participants of the Rugby League World Cup 2026 can apply for free.
How long you can stay
- Endorsed events: for the event, or up to 4 years
- Research, religious work, sport, entertainment, exchange and domestic work: up to 2 years
- Special programs and superyacht crew: up to 12 months
- Invited participants in community events: up to 3 months

Requirements That Apply to Most Streams
If you are in Australia, you can only apply if you hold a substantive visa, or your last substantive visa ceased within the last 28 days.
Most streams need a sponsor or a letter of support from an eligible organisation, depending on the activity.
You must genuinely intend to stay temporarily and only do the activity this visa allows.
You must have enough money to support yourself and maintain adequate health insurance.
For the Rugby League World Cup 2026, you must be invited by the Australian Rugby League Commission to take part.

Your activity decides your stream. Every stream costs from AUD535 and can be applied for in or outside Australia (but not in immigration clearance).
Take part in certain events endorsed by the Australian Government. Free for Rugby League World Cup 2026 participants.
Youth exchange, cultural enrichment or community programs, school language assistants or gap year school volunteering.
Full-time religious work to serve a religious institution in Australia.
Observe or take part in a research project at an Australian research or tertiary institution.
Invited to take part in a community-based event in Australia, including sporting events.
Play, coach, instruct or adjudicate for an Australian team, or do high-level sports training.
Work on film, television or live productions as a performer, production or support staff.
Work in Australia as a crew member of a superyacht.
Take part in a staff exchange and work in an Australian organisation.
Full-time domestic work in the household of certain senior foreign executives.
